Over the course of seven years the Moroccan-born French photographer Bruno Barbey (b.1941) made several visits to China, the first of which in 1973 during the official visit to China of French President George Pompidou. Although the Cultural Revolution (1966-1976) was not to end for another three years, the images he captured reveal a country gradually settling after more than half a decade of turmoil. This exhibition catalogue documents the exhibition at Beaugest Photo Gallery in Shanghai (Oct 2012 - Feb 2013) of more than 60 images that Barbey took between 1973 and 1980, from portraits of key Chinese political leaders of the period, including Zhou Enlai and Wang Hongwen, to peasant farmers, soldiers and factory workers.

Although Barbey was not the first western photographer to visit post-revolutionary China he was the first to shoot modern China in colour using Kodak colour Kodachrome film. In so doing his images leap from the page to present a vivid and highly textured record of everyday life in towns and cities across China in the mid to late 1970s. The land that emerges is one seemingly caught between realities. In many photographs the revolutionary propaganda banners of the early '60s can still been, yet the viewer feels the revolutionary fervor that inspired them has now abated. Instead, Barbey’s pictures reveal people occupied with the routines of work and family in a country yet to turn the corner and become the industrial behemoth we know today.

The exhibition China in Kodachrome 1973-1980 was held to mark Barbey’s return to China in 2010 to photograph the opening of the Shanghai World Expo. It includes an introductory text by Jean Loh, director of Beaugeste Photo Gallery, Shanghai.
