"Rare and powerful reminders of events that might otherwise be forgotten." - Vicky Goldberg on Red-Color News Soldier.

The publication in 2003 of the book Red-Color News Soldier, Li Zhensheng’s astonishing collection of photographs documenting the course of the Cultural Revolution, presented for the first time an authentic, uncensored version of the cataclysmic events that rocked China between 1966 and 1976. The images comprise Li’s personal experience of those years while working as a press photographer for the Heilongjiang Daily newspaper, the negatives for which lay hidden for decades until a chance meeting in 2003 with Robert Pledge, co-founder of the Contact Press Images photo agency in New York led to their final publication and exhibition. This book, published to coincide with the exhibition Winds and Clouds at Beaugeste Photo Gallery in Shanghai (January to April 2012) presents selections from this iconic series, most of which have never before been seen in China.

This exhibition catalogue includes more than 50 black and white images from Red-Color News Soldier and captures the extraordinary events that Li witnessed during those tumultuous years – from the hysterical denunciation of the Heilongjiang party secretaries in 1967 to scenes of euphoric mass political meetings and revolutionary operas. Many of the most poignant moments are the most human however, including the various self portraits that Li took to fill up the last few frames on his precious rolls of film; at home in his tiny one-room apartment or with his wife, Yingxia.

The book includes an introductory article by Robert Pledge and a conversation between Li Zhensheng and Jean Loh, director of Beaugest Photo Gallery, in which Li discusses images from the exhibition and his memories of the events they describe.

    The artist:
Li Zhensheng 李振盛 was born in 1940 in Dalian, Liaoning province. In 1963 he graduated from the Photography Department of Changchun Film Institute and shortly after began work as a press photographer for the Heilongjiang Daily newspaper, where he remained for 20 years. In 1996 he moved to New York and took up a lecturing position at Harvard University Fairbank Centre for East Asia.

In June 2003 Red-Color News Soldier, A Chinese Photographer's Odyssey Through The Cultural Revolution was published by Phaidon. In May 2005 Li Zhensheng was named one of the 54 World Press Photo Masters. Since 2003 the exhibition Red Color News Soldier has toured North America and Europe.
