The 2012 Three Shadows Photography Award Exhibition presents the work of 23 of China’s most exciting young photographers. The theme of this year’s Award is “Crossover” and highlights the explosion of different types of photographic practice and practitioners in China over the past decade. The advent of digital technology and the rise of social media have done much to accelerate this growth. This year’s award exhibition is intended to show the cross-fertilization of ideas, technology and techniques, from digital imaging to daguerreotypes that have come to characterise new photography in China.

The catalogue includes introductory texts by each of the specially invited selection committee, including the photographers Hilla Becher, Juan I-Jong and RongRong, plus Francois Hebel, director of Les Rencontres d’Arles, Kashara Michiko, chief curator of the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and Christopher Phillips, curator at the International Center of Photography in New York.

The artists shortlisted for the 2012 Three Shadows Photography Award were: Fan Shisan, Fung, Tsz Chung, Gao Jun, Geng Yi, Hu Xiao, Huang Zhenwei, Jia Xincheng, Lei Benben, Luo Bin, Wang Lin, Wang Qing, Xie Jiankun, Yan Yibo, Yang Xueguang, Yang Yuanyuan, Yao Yiwen, Yi Hui, Zhang Jin, Zhang Kechun, Zhao Yiyi, Zhou Shuoying, Zhu Feng, and Zhu Mo.

    The award:
The Three Shadows Photography Award in Beijing was launched in 2009 to highlight new and emerging photography talent from mainland China. It was co-founded by the photographers Rong Rong and Inri, who, in 2007, also co-founded the Three Shadows Photography Art Centre at Caochangdi, in Beijing. Three Shadows is the only independent institution in China solely dedicated to the study and exhibition of photography.
