The second of Zhang Xiao’s major series’ of works, Coastline continues the artist’s principal focus on the lived experience of people in a society undergoing massive change. Zhang began the series in 2009 and over the next four years travelled almost 18,000 kilometres documenting the urban landscape and people of a variety of coastal regions in China, from the mouth of the Yalu River in Liaoning province in the northeast to the Beilun River in Guangxi province in the South. Seen together the images comprise a condensed version of reality in which the mundane coexists with the bizarre and sometimes horrifying. In so doing Zhang starkly reveals the tensions between rich and poor and old and new in modern China.

In 2011 the series earned Zhang international recognition after it won the HSBC Photography Prize (France) and the MIO Photo Award (Japan). It has subsequently been presented at numerous exhibitions around the world and at festivals including the Bielsko-Biala FotoArt International Photography Festival (2013) in Poland, the Beijing International Photo Biennial (2013) and FORMAT 11 International Photography Festival (2011) in the UK.
